1837 - Born this day, [Stephen] Grover Cleveland 22nd and 24th presidents of the USA, in Caldwell, New Jersey. Died 24 June 1908, in Princeton, New Jersey and is also buried there. Married Frances Folsom on 2 June 1886 in the White House, Washington DC. (Frances Folsom was born on 2 June 1886 in Buffalo, New York and died on 29 October 1947 in Baltimore, Maryland.)

1925 - On this date in 1925, the worst tornado in US history passed through eastern Missouri, southern Illinois, and southern Indiana, killing 695 people, injuring some 13,000 people, and causing $17 million in property damage. Known as the "Tri-State Tornado," the deadly twister began its northeast track in Ellington, Missouri, but southern Illinois was the hardest hit. More than 500 of the total 695 people who perished were killed in southern Illinois, including 234 in Murphrysboro and 127 in West Frankfort.

A tornado is a dark, funnel-shaped cloud containing violently rotating air that develops in climate conditions that, in the United States, are generally unique to the central and southern plains and the Gulf states. The rotating winds of tornadoes can attain velocities of 300 mph, and its diameter can vary from a few feet to a mile. A tornado generally travels in a northeasterly distance at speeds of 20 to 40 mph and usually covers anywhere between one and more than 100 miles.

The Tri-State Tornado of 1925, which traveled 219 miles, spent more than three hours on the ground, devastated 164 square miles, had a diameter of more than a mile, and traveled at speeds in excess of 70 mph, is unsurpassed in US history.

1935 - A 30mph speed limit has been introduced in towns. The new law affects all streets with lighting, except those where lampposts are painted with black and white stripes. Police cars with gongs will stop offenders. Transport minister Leslie Hore-Belisha called on church leaders to support the move.

1967 - On a mid March morning in 1967 a massive oil tanker struck rocks off the Isles of Scilly with a shuddering shock, triggering the worst pollution emergency the world had then witnessed all along the South West coast from Lands End to Plymouth. That tanker was called Torrey Canyon, a name that lives on as a symbol of devastation. Almost a thousand feet long, carrying around 120,000 tons of crude oil, she was stuck fast on the notorious Seven Stones reef. The beautiful bays and coves of Cornwall were soon to pay the terrible price for maritime misjudgement. She was stricken on 18 March 1967, and as her black cargo surged into the sea, you could smell disaster coming towards the coast. Wave tops were smoothed by the crude, countless sea creatures and 200,000 birds died, and the holiday industry faced ruin, as an enormous oil slick grew relentlessly. Never before had there been pollution on such a scale.
